The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion welcomes a variety of contributions that focus on women’s experience or on gender as a category of analysis and that further feminist theory, consciousness, and practice. We are looking for material of several types and formats: scholarly, critical, and constructive articles, review essays (recent literature on a given topic), reports of significant feminist projects related to religion, liturgies, poetry, letters, and ideas for roundtable discussions.

The Journal of Feminist Studies (JFSR) is dedicated to following best practices on ethical matters, errors, and retractions. The prevention of publication malpractice is one of the important responsibilities of the editorial board. Any kind of unethical behavior is not acceptable, and JFSR does not tolerate plagiarism in any form. Authors submitting articles to JFSR affirm that manuscript contents are original.

The following duties outlined for editors, authors, and reviewers are based on the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics; https://publicationethics.org/about) Code of Conduct for Journal Editors.

Duties of Editor

Publication Decisions: Based on the review report of the editorial review board, the editor(s) can accept, reject, or request modifications to the manuscript.

Review of Manuscripts: All submitted articles are initially screened by JFSR editors to determine whether (a) they clearly focus on both feminism and religion, (b) demonstrate scholarly excellence, and (c) incorporate some consciousness of the geopolitical context of the feminist and religious issues discussed. The editors recognize, however, that the structures of global academic life make access to resources deeply unequal and that different regions of the world have their own scholarly sources, feminisms, styles, and standards. What matters most is that articles offer critical or constructive, nuanced arguments.

All papers appropriate for JFSR will be sent out anonymously to at least two reviewers, on whose judgment the editors rely heavily. Reviewers are asked to evaluate manuscripts not only on the basis of their scholarly competence, but also on the basis of their contribution to feminist theory, their acquaintance with feminist scholarship on relevant subjects, their awareness of significant issues in the women’s movement, and their vision of social and/or religious change.

In the case of submissions of poetry, reviewers are asked to evaluate creative pieces not only on the basis of their poetical mechanics but also on the basis of their religious content, contribution to feminist theory, their acquaintance with significant issues in the women’s movement, and their vision of social and/or religious change.

Writing that is in any way sexist, racist, classist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory will not be accepted. Language that is vituperative and disrespectful of others will not be accepted. All manuscripts and poems are subject to editorial modification. These policies are long-standing and are outlined within the journal as well as online.

Fair Review: The editors must ensure that each manuscript received by JFSR is reviewed for its intellectual content without regard to sex, gender, race, religion, citizenship, etc. of the authors.

Confidentiality: The editors must ensure that information regarding manuscripts submitted by the authors is kept confidential.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: The editors of JFSR will not use unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research without written consent of the author.

Consent to Publish: Consent to publish the final version of the work in question, to be listed as an author and the name of such authorship must be obtained from all authors.

Duties of Authors

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publications: We remind authors that standard academic practice forbids submission of the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently. In addition, authors must not publish redundant manuscripts.

Acknowledgement of Sources: Authors must acknowledge all sources of data used in the research and cite publications that have been influential in the research work.

Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to conception, design, execution or interpretation of the reported study. All persons who have made significant contribution must be listed as co-authors.

Duties of Reviewers

Confidentiality: Although the author’s name is removed before the manuscript reaches reviewers, any information regarding manuscripts should be kept confidential and be treated as privileged information by the reviewers.

Acknowledgement of Sources: Manuscript reviewers must ensure that authors have acknowledged all sources of data used in the research. Any kind of similarity or overlap between the manuscripts under consideration or with any other published paper of which reviewer has personal knowledge must be immediately brought to the editor’s notice.

Standards of Objectivity: Review of submitted manuscripts must be done fairly and the reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Promptness: In the event that a reviewer feels it is not possible for them to complete review of manuscript within stipulated time then this information must be communicated to the editor, so that the manuscript could be sent to another reviewer.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: The reviewers of JFSR will not use unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research without written consent of the author.
