Chasing Indiana’s Game a labor of love for former Evansville newspaper photographer

There’s nothing like old-time gymnasiums to create a sense of community in small towns all over Indiana. Michael E. Keating and Chris Smith’s coffee table photo book, “Chasing Indiana’s Game, the Hoosier Hardwood Project,” captures that feeling. A time when the high school basketball game on Friday night was often the most important social event of the week.

Released last week, “Chasing Indiana’s Game: The Hoosier Hardwood Project” is a visual tribute to Indiana high school basketball. Photographed and authored by Keating and Smith, the book features 178 photographs of more than 100 historical gymnasiums in Indiana. Beyond the photographs of basketball goals and glossy hardwood floors, Smith and Keating captured short essays recounting stories and memories from community members and some of Indiana’s most legendary players and coaches.
