Two IUP employees win Pat Hoefling Memorial Grants

We're pleased to announce that IUP staff members Tony Brewer, Composition Coordinator, and Darja Malcolm-Clarke, Project Manager/Editor, were recently awarded professional development grants from the Pat Hoefling Memorial Fund. This fund allows new and mid-career level staff to attend publishing conferences in order to learn about new technologies and practices within the industry. Brewer and Malcolm-Clarke will use their grants to attend the AAUP annual meeting in New Orleans next week.

The Pat Hoefling Memorial Fund, which is supported by donations, has helped send several IUP staff members to AAUP since its inception in 2010. Past winners include Production Coordinator Dan Pyle, Sponsoring Editor Raina Polivka, Trade Marketing and Publicity Manager Mandy Hussey, Project Manager/Editor June Silay, and Electronic Marketing Manager Laura Baich.

Both of this year's grant winners are looking forward to meeting colleagues from other presses at AAUP and learning more about issues that affect their jobs in the editorial/design/production (EDP) department. "I am thrilled and honored to have received a 2014 Pat Hoefling Grant," Brewer said. "I am also interested in learning how other presses are handling an XML workflow (which we are hoping to move toward) and also how ebook publishing and chunking are affecting tenure and promotion."

"I’m looking forward to the panels and plenary session on Open Access, as this topic is directly relevant to the future of IU Press and all university presses," Malcolm-Clarke said. "I’ll also be attending panels on editorial workflow that will afford me a greater sense of the issues project managers face and the best practices other professionals have developed to address them. The EDP department is always eager to think about how emerging technologies can improve efficiency."

The grant winners will be blogging about their experiences at AAUP, so check back soon to see their reports!
