Acquisitions Editor Janice Frisch was recently awarded a professional development grant from the Pat Hoefling Memorial Fund. The fund helps new and mid-career level staff attend publishing conferences and workshops to learn about new technology and trends in the industry. Frisch will use the grant to attend the Association of American University Presses' (AAUP) annual meeting.
The Pat Hoefling Memorial Fund is supported by donations in memory of Hoefling, who was sales and marketing director at IU Press from 2005 until her death in 2010.
Frisch will attend the AAUP conference June 16-17 in Philadelphia. She will be networking with others in the industry, attending panels on different subjects within book publishing and learning more about how other presses operate.
"Since I am a new editor I am looking forward to learning more about the acquisitions process from seasoned editors at other presses," Frisch said. "I’m also planning on attending some panels that relate to other aspects of publishing, including marketing and production, to gain a better understanding of the work that those departments do."
Frisch said when she found out she was receiving the award, she felt honored that her colleagues selected her as the recipient and excited to attend the conference.
"This gives me a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of professionals at other presses," she said. "I’m looking forward to learning their tips and tricks on things like building a new list and information on professional development."
